The United States Postal Service has raised international postage rates again, and there is likely to be a similar increase next year. The change was approved by Postal Service governors on Oct. 9 and must now be approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission. It will increase the price of an international letter from $1.15 to $1.20, the first increase since Jan. 26. However, international shippers from other countries will not see an increase as high as U.S. sellers.

The new international postage rates for light and medium weight items will increase by a large amount, while the increase for heavy items will be minimal. The charge for delivery is based on the "postage rate per item or kg", and the change to the UPU convention will cause the rates to increase. However, the change will affect only international mail, so it is best to plan ahead for future postage increases. The new postage rates will come into effect on the first of September 2020.

While the United States has many supporters for the new rates, many other countries are taking a wait-and-see approach. It will likely take several months until the PRC decides on the final proposal. Meanwhile, comment periods will be extended until March, and countries will weigh in on various items as they are presented. If the new international postage rates are approved, U.S. postal services should continue to raise the rates and make changes as needed to remain competitive.
